Phenotypic and Molecular Identification of Nocardia in Brain Abscess
© 2017 Advanced Biomedical Research | Published by Wolters Kluwer Medknow Sir, Shirani et al. recently reported an article entitled, “Nocardial brain abscess in a patient with pulmonary alveolar proteinosis” (DOI: 10.4103/2277-9175.164004).[1] The genus Nocardia is a Gram-positive aerobic, partially acid-fast, and fi lamentous bacterium that causes nocardial infections (nocardiosis) in human. T...
متن کاملMorphological and Molecular Identification of Acanthamoeba Spp from Surface Waters in Birjand, Iran, During 2014-2015
Background & Aims of the Study: Free-living amoebae (FLA) are opportunistic and ubiquitous protozoa that are widely found in various environmental sources. They are known to cause serious human infections including a fatal encephalitis, a blinding keratitis, and pneumonia. So, due to their medical importance, the identification of free living amoeba in water resources, as a sou...
متن کاملA Case of Brain Abscess Caused by Propionibacterium acnes 13 Months after Neurosurgery and Confirmed by 16S rRNA Gene Sequencing
Propionibacterium acnes is a gram-positive anaerobic bacillus and a normal inhabitant of the skin. Although it is often considered a contaminant of blood cultures, it can occasionally cause serious infections, including postoperative central nervous system infections. Here, we report the case of a 70-yr-old man who developed a large cerebral abscess caused by P. acnes 13 months after neurosurge...
متن کاملComments on: Phenotypic and Molecular Identification of Nocardia in Brain Abscess
Authors of the present letter reviewed the letter conducted by Fatahi-Bafghi entitled as "Phenotypic and molecular identification of nocardia in brain abscess."[3] Nocardia is a filamentous bacteria, branched Gram‐positive Bacilli, aerobic, and partially acid-fast, and its diagnosis depends on staining and culture.[4] In this case, microscopic study of the brain abscess specimen revealed, long ...
متن کاملMolecular identification of Leuconostoc mesenteroides as a cause of brain abscess in an immunocompromised patient.
Leuconostoc species are emerging pathogens that can cause severe infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Using molecular methods, we identified Leuconostoc mesenteroides as the cause of a brain abscess which was successfully treated by surgery and antimicrobial treatment. This is the first report of brain abscess caused by this species.
